WhatsApp ends support for older smartphones

Whatsapp is a widely used messaging app for iPhones, Android phones, and PCs.

Today, Whatsapp launches a new update that means the app will cease to run on phones that use Android 2.3.7 (Released 2010) or iPhone iOS 8 (Released 2014).

They are taking this step because out of date operating systems become vulnerable to attack. Companies prefer to invest in making their current software versions secure, to protect both your experience and their reputations.

This reasoning is also behind the decision of Microsoft to declare the Windows 7 ‘End of Life’, although Whatsapp takes a more robust option in that the app will completely stop working rather than the lesser measure of ceasing to spend company money supporting the older system.

Ending support for older systems is something that tends to cause inconvenience to consumers who have been using a ‘tried and tested’ or familiar system or device but these measures are necessary to keep those users safe from having their private data stolen.

Users of these older devices who need or want to keep running Whatsapp will find it necessary to either upgrade to a newer phone, or use the PC version.
